Walking at the beach of Yoff, a small fishing village in Dakar, I noticed that there were lots of washed up clothing. Watching the waves playing with the clothes I was wondering about what happened to the people who wore them...
For sure is that the village of Yoff is seriously affected by the sophisticated Western enterprises that fish extensively in the Senegalese sea. The country signed its first fishing agreements with the European Union in the early eighties. Senegal needed currency, and Europe was looking for sources of fish for its own consumers and fishing water for its fisherman. Senegal is also signing agreements with other countries.
Today the life of the local fishermen has become extremely difficult. When I was living in Yoff, and talked to the Yoffois about my immigration project, I heard many stories of young fishermen that were desperate and risked their lives to reach Europe by small fishingboats...
